Description

This six-course semester builds on the three year co-op diploma in automotive marketing by enhancing the student's post-secondary education to meet a degree-level standard required to pursue further studies towards completion of the Bachelor of Business - Automotive Management degree. The student's success in meeting the requirements of this six-course qualifying semester determines his or her eligibility to continue in a program towards completion of degree studies. Throughout the qualifying semester and subsequent two semesters, students develop their critical thinking and managerial skills through courses that promote leadership and a higher level of understanding in the theoretical foundations of a degree-level education in business as it is applied to the automotive industry. Students are trained to possess the skills to assume roles within the automotive industry at a higher level of responsibility than currently directed at the diploma level and to increase their grasp of the theoretical bases of key subjects essential to achieving a business degree. With completion of the qualifying semester, students will take further courses designed to augment their business education to bridge the gap between knowledge obtained through the diploma program and that required of a degree-level program in business with a focus on automotive management.

Note: This qualifying semester is designed to lead to completion of the requirements needed for meeting the standards of the Bachelor of Business-Automotive Management degree, for which the college has been granted a consent by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to offer this degree for a five-year term starting December 31, 2007. The college shall ensure that all students admitted to the above-named program during the period of consent will have the opportunity to complete the program within a reasonable time frame.

Program Learning Outcomes

The graduate has reliably demonstrated the ability to:

  • build on existing knowledge of marketing strategies for the automotive retail and wholesale business by including advertising's historical development and the legal issues pertaining to advertising in the automotive industry and evaluate its impact on the effectiveness in influencing consumer behavior;
  • enhance existing knowledge of work experience within the parts and service area of the dealership to allow them to identify ways to improve efficiency, asset management and workflow scheduling effectiveness;
  • engage in an automotive case study analysis to augment experience gained in the Georgian College Auto Show and industry work experience towards developing personal and professional goals in relation to career planning;
  • expand on knowledge of the accounting skills acquired for financial statement preparation in previous courses towards applying these to the management of operations, inventories and profitability within the dealership management system environment;
  • develop students' knowledge of dealership financial management by analyzing the financial stability of a dealership and making recommendations for improvement, and using break-even and cash flow analysis for financial decision-making;
  • increase students' statistical knowledge by extending the application of probability theory, hypothesis testing and other inferential techniques while gaining experience using computer-based statistical analysis tools and applying this analysis to the automotive industry;
  • acquire skills in researching, organizing, evaluating, synthesizing and analyzing financial, economic and statistical information for business decision-making purposes based on global thinking.

For progression to the Bachelor of Business - Automotive Management Degree programs, students much attain a minimum grade of 60% in each course and an overall average of 65% for the program.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

AUBR3000 Accounting 42.0 Hours

This course builds on the accounting skills acquired for financial statement preparation in previous courses. Emphasis is placed on understanding how the financial statements are used in the analytical tools to manage operations, inventories and profitability. Particular attention is given to internal controls and assets safeguarding. With the accounting application of the Dealership Management System, transactions are traced through all stages of the accounting cycle, including departmental accounting to the financial statement preparation.

AUBR3001 Advertising 21.0 Hours

This course builds on students' basic knowledge of the role of advertising in society and its historical development. Students learn the basic planning considerations for a successful advertising campaign including media types, techniques and strategies and media planning. Topics also include promotions, public relations and corporate advertising.

AUBR3002 Automotive Case Study Analysis 42.0 Hours

This course builds on students' participation in previous professional experience including auto shows and industry work experience. Students reflect on their own leadership style, strengths and weaknesses and their experience in overseeing operations within an automotive event. This course also requires students to reframe their professional experience to critically analyze the efficiency and effectiveness of an organization from their past work experiences. Within this schema, students conduct research and deliver their findings via professional critiques and reports.

AUBR3003 Dealer Fixed Operations 42.0 Hours

This course builds on students' knowledge and work experience within the service area of the dealership to allow them to identify ways to improve efficiency and workflow scheduling effectiveness. Included in this course is an examination of parts inventory control, warranty claims and expense control. This course also examines the major government regulatory issues affecting the automobile parts and service business.

AUBR3004 Finance 21.0 Hours

This course builds on students' knowledge of dealership financial management. Dealership efficiency, productivity and profitability are assessed through financial statement analysis. Topics also include break-even and cash flow analysis.

AUBR3005 Statistics 42.0 Hours

This course builds on topics covered in previous statistics courses, extending probability theory, hypothesis testing and other inferential techniques to a range of new problems. Students gain experience with the use of computer-based statistical analysis tools. Students also learn to analyze data and apply the results to the automotive industry/

Adults with significant life and work experience may receive credits toward a college certificate or diploma program through an assessment process.
